Student Numeracy Assistance Centre (SNACK)
Overview
The Student Numeracy Assistance Centre (SNACK) is a numeracy support initiative in York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Launched in Fall 2021 with support from the Office of the Dean, SNACK was created to help students strengthen the quantitative skills needed for success in university study.
SNACK supports students enrolled in courses that involve mathematics, statistics, Excel, and introductory programming. Its goal is to make quantitative learning more accessible by providing timely, student-centred academic support.
What SNACK offers
SNACK provides:
- one-to-one peer tutoring
- skill-development workshops
- online learning resources
- support for topics from foundational to advanced studies
Students can seek help with topics such as basic functions, algebra, linear algebra, statistics, equations, calculus, Excel, and related quantitative methods.
Role and significance
As inaugural Academic Director, Robert McKeown helped lead the development of SNACK as a faculty-wide support initiative focused on numeracy, access, and student success. The centre reflects a broader commitment to strengthening quantitative confidence and capability among students in the liberal arts, business, economics, and related fields.
